Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear, identify individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words) that can be manipulated (blending and segmenting)

- Synthetic Phonics is a bottom up or part to whole approach--learning the individual sounds and then putting them together
- Analytic Phonics is whole to part approach--starting with words one notices and identifies generalizations or similarities in words or similar patterns in different words

Syllable is a unit of sound with one vowel sound. The number of syllables in a word is determined by the number of vowel sounds
SYLLABLE DIVISION
- Closed Syllable--cvc--generally has a short vowel sound such as cat, bit, cut
- Open Syllable--cv or v--has one vowel at the end or beginning of the syllable and generally says the vowel name such as I, me, open
C = closed syllable as in "cat" (C)
L = consonant -le syllable as in "ta/ble" (L)
O = open syllable as in "we" (O)
V = vowel team syllable as in "read" (V)
E = vowel-consonant-e syllable as in "cake" (V_E)
R = r-controlled syllable as in "barn" and "bird" (R)

The word "dogs" has 2 morphemes as dog is one and s is another while
avocado has 4 syllables but one morpheme

Schwa is the neutral vowel sound in the unaccented or unstressed syllable in words. It generally makes the sound of /u/ or in as in open, pupil and remote.
